Bio
A late convert to Australian football who switched from soccer at age 16, Ron de Iulio carved out a unique path to Princes Park. After winning the Fothergill-Round Medal as the VFA's best young player, he was originally drafted by North Melbourne but was traded to Carlton for Richard Dennis before playing a single senior game for the Kangaroos. The pacey utility made the Kangaroos regret the decision almost immediately, bursting onto the scene in his debut 1992 season as a livewire small forward. He finished second in the club's goalkicking to Stephen Kernahan and famously booted five goals against North Melbourne in just his fourth AFL match.
Despite his electrifying start, de Iulio became one of the decade's notable "hard luck" stories during a golden era for the Blues. While he successfully reinvented himself as a running defender in the mid-90s to prolong his career, he battled inconsistency and selection squeezes at the worst possible times. He was on the list for three Grand Final appearances (1993, 1995, and 1999) but was not selected for any of them, missing out on the 1995 Premiership entirely after playing just two games that season. He eventually brought up his 100-game milestone in 1999 before spending his final season in the reserves, eventually retiring as a member of the AFL's Italian Team of the Century shortlist.
