Bio
Recruited from Parade College, Ron Harvey was a towering presence who worked his way through the thirds and seconds to become a mainstay of the Fitzroy side in the 1950s and early 60s. Standing at 192cm, he was a mobile ruckman who could push forward with effect, a versatility that saw him claim the club’s Best and Fairest in 1959 and earn selection for Victoria. His ability to impact contests both in the air and at ground level saw him poll well in the Brownlow Medal, finishing equal sixth in 1962.
Harvey is perhaps best remembered for captaining the Lions in the famous "Miracle Match" of 1963, where a youthful Fitzroy side upset the powerhouse Geelong team against all odds. A loyal servant during a lean era for the club, he also tasted success as a member of the 1959 Night Premiership side. After leaving the VFL, he took his leadership qualities to the bush, serving as captain-coach for Wodonga in the Ovens & Murray League and later for Coolamon in the Riverina.
