Bio
Recruited from Glen Ormond in the amateur ranks, Ron Irwin overcame a slow start to his VFL career to become a fixture of the Melbourne defence during the mid-1940s. After managing just a single senior appearance in his debut 1943 season, the solid full-back established himself as a key pillar in the Demons' backline over the following three years, using his 185cm frame to quell opposition forwards. His time at the top level was unfortunately cut short when he suffered a severe knee injury in Round 3, 1947, forcing him to miss the club's 1948 premiership campaign entirely. Irwin attempted a comeback as captain-coach of VFA side Yarraville in 1950 after two years on the sidelines, but a recurrence of the knee issue forced him into permanent retirement early the following season.
