A diminutive but sharp local product who graduated through the club’s thirds, McEwin established himself as a vital component of Essendon's golden era under Dick Reynolds. Although standing just 169cm, he was a speedy and highly skilled rover who rotated effectively through the forward pocket, renowned for his ability to hit the ball at pace and deliver with precision. After winning the reserves best and fairest in 1949, he broke into the senior side just in time to feature in that year's premiership triumph—notably kicking the sealing goal in the Second Semi-Final—and backed it up as a key member of the 1950 flag-winning team. A dangerous goal-kicker who once booted seven majors in a match against South Melbourne, he formed a formidable small-man battery alongside legends like Bill Hutchison before departing the VFL at just 25 to captain-coach South Mildura.
