Bio
Hailing from the Apple Isle where he developed his craft with Longford and Hobart, Ron McGowan crossed Bass Strait to establish himself as a resolute key defender for Footscray. A strong-marking tall who stood 185cm, he was regularly tasked with holding down centre half-back or full-back, using his aerial strength and physical presence to repel opposition forays. McGowan served as a reliable anchor in the Bulldogs' defence throughout the late 1960s, though his diligent service coincided with a lean on-field era that saw him play his entire VFL career without a finals appearance. He eventually departed the Western Oval to finish his playing days in the SANFL, spending two seasons with South Adelaide before retiring.
