Bio
Recruited from South Warrnambool, Ron McKeown entered the VFL system as a prodigious talent, debuting for Collingwood in 1984 as a 17-year-old. A versatile key position player capable of operating effectively at both ends of the ground, McKeown used his 191cm frame and strong overhead marking to impact contests, booting more than 100 goals throughout his tenure despite spending significant time in defence. He became a fixture of the Magpies' lineup in the late 1980s, establishing himself as the club's first-choice full-back and a regular senior contributor during the Leigh Matthews era.
McKeown's career narrative is inextricably linked to the heartbreak of the 1990 premiership campaign. After holding down a key defensive post for the majority of the season, he played in the famous drawn Qualifying Final against West Coast but was controversially omitted for the replay in favour of a tactical reshuffle. He was unable to force his way back into the side for the drought-breaking Grand Final victory over Essendon, missing out on the premiership medallion despite playing 18 games that year. McKeown remained at Victoria Park until the end of 1993, but persistent injuries and form fluctuations limited his output in his final seasons before he departed the AFL scene.
