Recruited from Mordialloc in the Federal Football League, Ron Mudge was a mid-sized utility who played sporadic senior football for St Kilda during the tumultuous years of the Second World War. Standing 179cm, he struggled to cement a permanent spot in the starting 18, managing just 11 games scattered across three interrupted seasons between 1940 and 1942. Despite largely operating on the fringe of selection, Mudge proved a good luck charm in his final year, featuring in both of the Saints' rare victories during the 1942 season—against Hawthorn and Essendon at Toorak Park. He made his final VFL appearance midway through that year before departing the league scene.
