Teams

Recruited from Queenscliff at the mature age of 24, Ron Shapter was a left-footed ruckman and forward who carved out a journeyman career across three VFL clubs during the 1930s. He debuted for South Melbourne in Round 1, 1930—the same day as club legend Bob Pratt—and did not miss a match in his first season, but he struggled to hold his spot the following year and departed just before the Swans' famous premiership era. Shapter crossed to Fitzroy in search of regular senior football, breaking into the side consistently in 1933 before again finding himself on the fringe. After a season captain-coaching Port Melbourne in the VFA, he managed a brief return to the league with Essendon in 1936, adding two final games to his tally before returning to the Bellarine Peninsula to coach his home club.
