Recruited from the Goulburn Valley, Ron Simpson was a country football standout who joined Fitzroy after previously winning a Best and Fairest with Tongala and serving in the RAAF during World War II. Making his debut just days before his 23rd birthday in 1949, the 188cm big man was utilised primarily as a ruckman who could rest forward and impact the scoreboard. He proved to be a handy goal-kicker for a follower, averaging better than a goal every second game, but struggled to lock down a permanent spot in the senior side. Simpson remained a depth player for the Lions' ruck division for five seasons, offering reliable contests and height whenever called upon until his final VFL appearance in 1953.
