Recruited from Wangaratta Combined Churches, Ron Stone was a versatile utility who rose from the thirds to become a premiership player for Carlton. After featuring in the club's 1963 Under-19s flag, Stone broke into the senior side in 1965, eventually making the number 44 guernsey his own. Standing 187cm, he was capable of playing as a ruckman or defender, often utilised in the back pocket where his distinctively awkward but effective kicking style became a trademark. His career highlight came in 1968 when he played in the Blues' famous Grand Final victory over Essendon, helping the club break a 21-year premiership drought. He played one further season before finishing his VFL career at the end of 1969.
