Arriving at Glenferrie Oval from Carrum with a reputation as a future star, Ron Stubbs was a talented big man whose VFL career was ultimately stifled by recurring shoulder injuries. Restricted to just 17 senior appearances over four seasons, he agonizingly missed out on a place in Hawthorn's 1971 premiership side despite breaking into the team early that year. While his body let him down at the top level, Stubbs proved his durability and class in a remarkable post-VFL career, becoming a formidable ruckman for Dandenong during the VFA's rugged mid-70s era, including an appearance in the infamous "Bloodbath" Grand Final against Port Melbourne. He later moved to Tasmania to play for Devonport, where his performances were of such high quality that he represented the state at the 1980 Adelaide Carnival and earned All-Australian selection, a rare and prestigious honour for a player competing outside the major Victorian league.
