Bio
Recruited from Middle Park, Ron Taylor was a strongly built key position player whose football career was ultimately overshadowed by his achievements in the boxing ring. Standing 188cm, he offered a significant physical presence for South Melbourne and enjoyed his best season in 1955, playing 15 games and proving useful as a marking target in attack. After leaving the Lakeside Oval, Taylor spent a season in the VFA with Brunswick before St Kilda offered him a VFL lifeline in 1958, where he added four final senior games to his tally. His athletic legacy extended far beyond football; shortly after hanging up his boots, he won the 1959 Australian amateur heavyweight title and represented his country at the 1960 Rome Olympics.
