Bio
Recruited from Springvale, Ron Wetzel joined South Melbourne in 1969 during the early stages of the Norm Smith coaching era. Standing 183cm, he was a versatile utility who largely operated in defence, using his frame to compete in marking contests against opposition forwards. He made a promising start with 12 games in his debut season at the Lakeside Oval but found opportunities more limited in 1970 as the Swans began to show signs of improvement. Unable to cement a permanent position in the senior side, Wetzel departed the VFL landscape following the 1970 season with 18 games and a solitary goal to his name.
