Bio
Recruited from the Calder Cannons with pick 81 in the 2012 National Draft, Rory Atkins worked his way from a speculative late selection to a staple of the Adelaide Crows' midfield. Known affectionately as "The Rat," he established himself as a distinct outside runner with a penetrating left boot, playing a key role on the wing during Adelaide's surge to the 2017 Grand Final. His ability to find space and link up play made him a valuable asset during the Crows' peak years, but his tenure at West Lakes concluded when he exercised his rights as a free agent following the 2020 season to secure a long-term deal with the Gold Coast Suns.
The move north proved contentious, as Atkins struggled to replicate his Crows form or cement a regular position in the Suns' best 22, leading to criticism regarding the length and value of his contract. His time at Carrara was frequently interrupted by omissions, resulting in extensive stints in the VFL where he often accumulated high possession numbers without regaining a permanent senior spot. Following his delisting by Gold Coast at the end of 2024, he was offered an AFL lifeline by Port Adelaide in the Rookie Draft. Now back in South Australia, Atkins joins the Power as a seasoned depth player, tasked with providing experienced cover and mentorship at Alberton.
