A Southport product, Rory Thompson holds a unique place in Gold Coast history as the club's first true local junior to reach the senior list. Signed as a Queensland zone selection ahead of the Suns' inaugural 2011 campaign, the 200cm backman developed into the club's premier key defender during their formative years. An athletic and close-checking fullback, Thompson was routinely tasked with shutting down the competition's most dangerous spearheads, using his reach and spoiling ability to quell opposition attacks while allowing defensive partners like Steven May to play looser intercept roles.

Despite his importance to the Suns' structure, Thompson's career became a testament to resilience against relentless injury setbacks. His momentum was frequently stalled by body issues, most notably distinct ACL injuries that forced him to miss three consecutive seasons between 2019 and 2021. In a display of significant perseverance, he eventually returned to the senior side in 2022 after 1,379 days on the sidelines—one of the longest absences between games in VFL/AFL history. He retired later that year as a one-club player and a Gold Coast Life Member, having managed 106 games over a grueling 12-year tenure.
