A classy half-forward and rover known for his smooth skills and goal sense, Ross Brewer established himself at Melbourne during the 1970s, eventually topping the club's goalkicking in 1976. While he was a consistent performer for the Demons, his career is best defined by the high-profile trade that sent him to Collingwood prior to the 1979 season, with the erratic superstar Phil Carman moving in the opposite direction. This move allowed Brewer to join his brother Ray at Victoria Park and immediately thrust him into premiership contention.

Brewer became a fixture in the Magpies' forward line during the Tom Hafey era, featuring in the heartbreaking Grand Final losses of 1979 and 1980. He is inextricably linked to one of the game's most debated moments, being the opponent in the vicinity when Carlton's Wayne Harmes tapped the ball back into play from the boundary line in the 1979 decider. Brewer concluded his VFL tenure with a two-year stint at Richmond, retiring as a respected goalkicker who played 174 games across three clubs.
