Bio
Arriving at Victoria Park from Numurkah, Ross Dunne established himself as a durable key position utility capable of holding down a spot in the ruck, forward line, or defence. While perhaps lacking the polish of some contemporaries, Dunne was a strong overhead mark and a reliable kick who provided essential structure during a period where Collingwood frequently contended for premierships. His versatility allowed the Magpies to plug gaps across the ground, resulting in a consistent career that spanned 12 seasons and saw him reach the 200-game milestone.
Dunne is indelibly linked to the dramatic conclusion of the 1977 Grand Final against North Melbourne. In the dying moments of the match, he took a pack mark from a long Phil Manassa kick and converted the set shot to tie the scores, forcing the second drawn Grand Final in VFL history. Although the Magpies were soundly beaten in the replay the following week, Dunne's clutch goal remains one of the most significant individual moments in the club's folklore. He retired in 1978, leaving the game as a highly respected life member of the Collingwood Football Club.
