Hailing from Leeton in the New South Wales Riverina, Ross Elwin was a formidable key position prospect whose promising VFL career was cruelly curtailed by injury. Standing at a towering 191cm, Elwin was a physical giant for his era, renowned for his ability to pull down tremendous high marks and propel the ball huge distances by foot. He made an immediate impression at South Melbourne, utilising his size and aggression at both centre half-forward and centre half-back to win the club’s Best First Year Player award in 1968. Despite establishing himself as a feared competitor who played the game hard but fair, a severe knee injury restricted him to just 10 games over three seasons, eventually forcing him to return to the bush where he became a legendary figure in local football coaching and administration.
