Bio
Recruited from Assumption Old Boys, Ross Gallagher was a pint-sized rover who faced an uphill battle to establish himself at the elite level due to his light 168cm frame. He first broke into the Footscray side as a teenager in 1975 but struggled to hold his spot in the senior 22, managing only sporadic appearances over two seasons before drifting out of the side. After a significant hiatus from the top flight, he earned a recall to the Bulldogs' lineup in 1981, adding seven games to his tally as a goal-kicking small before departing the VFL for good. While his time at the Western Oval was brief, Gallagher became a genuine star in the VFA with Sandringham, where his playmaking and goal sense flourished. He cemented a strong footballing legacy as a key member of the Zebras' 1985 premiership team, a VFA state representative, and a runner-up in the J.J. Liston Trophy, proving himself as one of the premier association footballers of the 1980s.
