Bio
Recruited from Box Hill High School, Ross Growcott was a tall defender who made an immediate impression at Hawthorn in the early 1960s. He broke into the senior lineup in his debut 1963 season and established himself quickly enough to feature in that year's Grand Final loss to Geelong, a significant achievement for a first-year player. Standing 187cm, Growcott was typically deployed across the half-back line or in the back pocket, where his height allowed him to match up on taller opponents while playing a strictly defensive, shut-down role. Although he was unable to maintain the consistency of his breakout rookie season during the club's subsequent slide down the ladder, he remained a handy depth player for the Hawks throughout the decade, eventually departing the VFL in 1970 after 53 games in the brown and gold.
