Bio
Recruited from North Albury, Ross Henshaw became the defensive anchor of North Melbourne's celebrated 1970s dynasty. Standing at 189cm, he was surprisingly tall for a back pocket, a trait that gave the Kangaroos unique flexibility in their defensive matchups. While attacking defenders like David Dench were famous for rebounding from the last line, Henshaw provided the essential defensive discipline and grit that allowed them the freedom to run. He endured the club's wooden spoon season in 1972 before flourishing under Ron Barassi, eventually playing a critical role in five consecutive Grand Final appearances.
Henshaw secured premiership medallions in 1975 and 1977, cementing his place in the club's history as a reliable big-game player. His style was defined by selfless negation rather than flash, a reputation statistically confirmed by his long-standing record for the most VFL/AFL games played without polling a single Brownlow Medal vote. He retired in 1983 as a vital, if often unsung, hero of the club's golden era, eventually being inducted into the Ovens and Murray Hall of Fame for his achievements in both country and metropolitan football.
