Family

Recruited to Fitzroy in the mid-1980s, Ross Lyon established himself as a tenacious utility who alternated between half-forward and the midfield. While rarely the headline act, Lyon was highly regarded for his football intelligence, defensive accountability, and ability to hit the scoreboard, finishing his time at the Lions with more than a century of goals. His durability, however, was frequently tested, with recurring injuries often interrupting his momentum during a difficult decade for the financially strapped club.

Seeking a fresh start after ten seasons with Fitzroy, Lyon moved north to join the Brisbane Bears for the 1995 season. His tenure in Queensland was brief, as persistent knee issues restricted him to just two appearances before forcing his premature retirement at age 29. Although his playing career was curtailed by injury, the tactical discipline and grit he displayed on the field laid the foundation for his eventual transition into one of the modern game's most prominent senior coaches.
