Recruited from the Eastern Ranges, Rowan Warfe entered the AFL system during a turbulent period for Fitzroy, making his debut in 1994 as the club battled for survival. While he established himself as a capable young player, Warfe was not included in the eight Lions selected to join the Brisbane Bears following the 1996 merger, leaving his career briefly in limbo. He was subsequently thrown a lifeline by the Sydney Swans, who selected him with pick 34 in the 1996 National Draft, allowing him to continue his career in the Harbour City.

At Sydney, Warfe developed into a disciplined back pocket specialist known for his close-checking style and reliability in one-on-one contests. He became a fixture in the Swans' defence during the Rodney Eade era, often tasked with nullifying dangerous opposition small forwards while providing a steady head in the back half. Although his later years were hampered by persistent knee injuries that limited his output, Warfe proved to be a valuable recruit for Sydney, surpassing the 100-game milestone before retiring at the conclusion of the 2004 season.
