Born in Korweinguboora before moving to the Magpies' heartland as a child, Roy Allen was a local product who attended Clifton Hill Primary School and grew up carrying Dick Lee's kit bag to gain entry to Victoria Park. He served a dedicated apprenticeship with the club's reserves side, Collingwood District, featuring in their 1919 and 1920 premierships before finally breaking into the senior lineup. A defender who was handed the number one guernsey, Allen made his VFL debut in Round 3, 1924 against Melbourne, but his top-level playing career was restricted to just two appearances in that solitary season. Despite his brief time as a player, Allen established a lasting legacy in the game as a respected official across field, boundary, and goal umpiring duties—famously reporting John Coleman in 1951—and later achieved distinction as just the second former VFL player to reach the age of 100.
