Bio
Recruited from Mitcham as a teenager, Roy Baldwin was a pacey and agile winger who appeared destined for a long VFL career before world events intervened. After breaking into the Hawthorn senior side in 1944 and establishing himself as a regular the following season, his momentum was halted when he enlisted in the Army just weeks after his 18th birthday. Baldwin spent two years serving in New Britain, assisting with the repatriation of Japanese prisoners of war, before returning to Glenferrie Oval in 1948. While he managed a strong comeback season, a hernia operation in 1949 severely hampered his ability to train and retain his spot in the side. He eventually left the VFL to return to his hometown of Kilsyth, where he became a local football legend, playing in five premierships and eventually receiving an OAM for his services to sport.
