Stats
Bio
Originating from the western Victorian town of Koroit, Roy "Tiger" Bence was a diminutive rover who carved out a respectable VFL career despite standing just 163cm. He initially broke into the league with South Melbourne in 1922, playing 15 games in his debut season. However, he left the club at the end of the year, spending the next two seasons in the VFA with Brighton.
St Kilda offered Bence a second chance at the top level in 1925, and he seized the opportunity to become a mainstay of their midfield for the next nine years. True to his nickname, he was known for his tenacious, scrappy style of play, often burrowing into packs to win the ball against much larger opponents. He rarely missed a match during his time at the Junction Oval, retiring in 1933 as a durable and loyal servant who had chalked up over 150 league games.
