Recruited from the Richmond reserves, Roy Donovan joined Hawthorn midway through the club's inaugural VFL season in 1925. He arrived at Glenferrie Oval in time to make his senior debut in Round 9, adding valuable height to the lineup at 182cm. As one of the many players trialled during the Mayblooms' difficult entry into the league, Donovan managed nine senior games across two years, battling to establish himself in a struggling side. His career was brought to a premature end in 1926 when he suffered a severe broken ankle in a reserves match. Unable to recover his place in the team, he was delisted at the end of the season, leaving him as a brief but noted footnote in Hawthorn's foundation years.
