Bio
Recruited from the local Collingwood District side, Roy Gray was a goal-kicking follower who showed early promise at Victoria Park but struggled to cement a permanent spot in a powerful Magpies lineup. He made his senior debut in 1912 and proved to be a handy inclusion over two seasons, booting 20 goals in just 18 games—a strong strike rate for a resting ruckman in the dead-ball era. Despite his ability to hit the scoreboard, Gray found himself squeezed out of the Collingwood side and crossed to Melbourne for the 1914 season. His time with the Fuchsias was brief, yielding only a single senior appearance in a Round 4 loss to St Kilda. Gray eventually found a more permanent home in the VFA with Northcote, where he played on either side of the association’s wartime suspension, before his premature death at the age of 40 in 1933.
