Bio
Hailing from Golden Point in the Ballarat Football League, Roy James was the centre of a fierce recruiting battle before he had even donned a VFL guernsey. A wingman who had dazzled scouts during exhibition matches against visiting League representative teams, he was heavily linked to South Melbourne before Melbourne secretary Andrew Manzie pulled off a recruiting coup to secure his services in 1923. The club viewed his signature as a major triumph, yet James found it difficult to translate his sparkling country form to the metropolitan game. He managed just three senior appearances and a solitary goal over two seasons, eventually departing for Essendon in 1926 where he was unable to break into the senior side.
