Bio
Recruited from local side North Melbourne CYMS, Roy Lyons was a talented key forward whose modest VFL statistics belied his future status as a goal-kicking legend in the VFA. After debuting in 1937 and producing an early career highlight with a five-goal haul against Carlton in just his fourth game, Lyons struggled to cement a permanent spot at Arden Street, eventually spending the 1939 season in country Victoria with Murtoa. He returned to North Melbourne briefly in 1940 but found his true calling after transferring to Prahran later that year, where he immediately transformed into a dominant scoring force. Lyons etched his name into football folklore during the 1940 VFA Grand Final by booting nine goals in a losing side against Port Melbourne, backing up that performance the following season by topping the century mark with 109 goals.
