Bio
Recruited from Caulfield, Roy McEachen was a sturdy footballer whose brief VFL career was defined by a dramatic 1935 campaign and a tragic, premature end. He broke into the South Melbourne lineup early in that season and became a fixture in the side until a four-week suspension for striking North Melbourne's Jack Smith on the eve of the finals threatened his premiership dreams. McEachen received a reprieve when selected as the 19th man for the 1935 Grand Final, where he came off the bench to kick the solitary goal of his career in the Bloods' loss to Collingwood. He played just three matches in 1936 before departing to captain-coach Narrandera in New South Wales, but his planned return to the VFL was cut short when he died of a sudden illness in December 1937, aged just 24.
