Bio
Recruited from Broadmeadows in North Melbourne’s metropolitan zone, Roy Ramsay was a reliable back pocket who spent his early career fighting for opportunities in Ron Barassi’s star-studded line-up. While he was a serviceable defender during the club's golden era of the late 1970s, he often found himself on the fringe of senior selection, playing in four finals but heartbreakingly missing out on the club's Grand Final appearances in 1976 and 1978, as well as the 1977 Premiership triumph.
Ramsay crossed to Essendon in 1982 seeking greater opportunity, but he struggled to break into the senior side, managing just three games while winning the club's Reserves Best and Fairest. He returned to Arden Street the following season and enjoyed the best form of his career, finally cementing himself as a week-in, week-out fixture in the Kangaroos' defence. He played 63 games over the next three seasons before a shoulder injury forced him out of the VFL in 1987. A cousin of VFA legend Billy Swan, Ramsay finished his playing days with Port Melbourne.
