Bio
Born in Norwood, South Australia, Roy Taylor found his path to the VFL not through the SANFL, but via the local Melbourne pathways of Richmond City and Beverley Juniors. He arrived at Punt Road during the tumult of the First World War, making his debut in the opening round of the unique 1916 season as the youngest player in the side. Taylor immediately established himself as a durable and consistent contributor, playing every match of his debut year as the Tigers simultaneously "won" the wooden spoon and competed in the finals due to the reduced four-team competition. A regular fixture in the senior side throughout the war years, often rotating between the forward line and the midfield, he eventually found himself squeezed out of the lineup as the league returned to normalcy. He was cleared to VFA club Brunswick in 1919 before a brief return to the Richmond Reserves.
