Bio
Recruited from the small country town of Great Western, Roy West wasted no time making his mark at Kardinia Park. The reliable fullback produced one of the most remarkable debut seasons in league history, winning the Carji Greeves Medal as Geelong's best and fairest in 1961. This instant success established him as a pillar of the Cats' defence, where his discipline and strength in the contest made him a difficult opponent for the era's best forwards.
West's crowning achievement came two years later as a key member of the 1963 premiership side that defeated Hawthorn. His consistent form also earned him selection for Victoria, wearing the 'Big V' in interstate football. West remained a fixture in the Geelong backline until his departure after the 1967 season, retiring as a premiership hero and one of the few players to claim a club champion award in their first year of VFL football.
