Bio
Hailing from a renowned footballing dynasty in Queanbeyan, Roy Williams arrived at Victoria Park in 1952 as a powerful utility with a background in both rugby league and heavyweight boxing. The youngest of five brothers who dominated the Canberra league, Williams was spotted by scouts after a best-on-ground performance for Canberra at the amateur carnival. He possessed a rare combination of size and speed, eventually finding his feet at VFL level when swung from defence to the forward line, notably booting three goals against South Melbourne. Despite these glimpses of potential, he struggled to cement a permanent spot in a strong Magpies side that went on to play in the Grand Final, leading him to return to the ACT the following year. Back home, he resumed a legendary local career, winning multiple premierships with Queanbeyan-Acton and representing Canberra at the 1958 Carnival.
