Bio
Recruited from Clarence in Tasmania, Royce Hart arrived at Punt Road in 1967 and immediately established himself as the premier centre half-forward of his generation. Possessing a rare combination of agility and overhead strength, he revolutionised the position by popularising the drop punt as a reliable method of field kicking and goal conversion. Hart became the on-field general of the Tom Hafey dynasty, playing a pivotal role in four premierships, including a debut season flag where he was the team's leading goalkicker.
Despite his dominance, Hart's career was frequently interrupted by chronic knee injuries which ultimately forced his retirement at just 29. His resilience became part of football folklore, most notably during the 1973 preliminary final against Collingwood when he came off the bench half-fit to inspire a famous comeback victory. He served as club captain from 1972 to 1975 and his standing in the game is reflected by his elevation to Legend status in the Australian Football Hall of Fame and his selection at centre half-forward in the AFL Team of the Century.
