Bio
Recruited as a mature-age draftee from East Perth, Rupert Betheras overcame a late start to his AFL career to become a cult figure at Collingwood. While he was known for his artistic and free-spirited interests off the field, his on-field reputation was built on desperate, blue-collar effort, often playing as a run-with midfielder or defensive half-forward who attacked the contest with reckless abandon. Betheras became a key fixture in Mick Malthouse’s gritty lineups, playing in consecutive Grand Finals in 2002 and 2003 and famously kicking a sealer in the 2002 Preliminary Final against Adelaide. Despite his standing as a consistent contributor and regular member of the starting 22, his career ended abruptly when he was delisted following the 2003 Grand Final, a ruthless list management decision that shocked many supporters.
