Bio
Recruited from the Ascot Youth Centre, Russell Blew established himself as a premier wingman during a golden era for the Essendon Football Club. Joining the under-19s in 1959, he quickly rose through the ranks to become a senior regular known for his dash, neat disposal, and ability to break lines with pace. Blew was instrumental in Essendon's success throughout the 1960s, playing a key role in both the 1962 and 1965 premiership victories. His consistency was rewarded with state selection for Victoria and a runner-up finish in the club's 1964 best and fairest count, cementing his reputation as one of the most reliable mid-sized players in the competition.
Despite his on-field brilliance, Blew's career faced a significant hurdle when a severe knee injury sidelined him for the majority of the 1966 and 1967 seasons. He managed a successful return in 1968, playing every game and proving he had lost none of his ability, but surprisingly departed the VFL at just 26 years of age to captain-coach Waverley in the VFA. He later became a respected football commentator on television and radio. His standing at Windy Hill was formally recognised in 2002 when he was ranked number 56 in the "Champions of Essendon" list.
