Recruited from Bentleigh, Russell Colcott was a medium-sized forward who struggled to cement a regular senior spot in Ian Ridley's Melbourne side during the late 1960s. Despite showing prolific form in the seconds—where he featured in back-to-back reserves premierships in 1969 and 1970—he found his path to the senior goalfront consistently blocked by established targets like Ross Dillon and Ray Carr. He is perhaps best remembered for a colourful locker room incident where Ridley, a stern disciplinarian, personally took a pair of scissors to Colcott's hair before a reserves Grand Final after the youngster failed to follow an instruction to get a trim. After managing 15 senior games in three seasons, Colcott departed the VFL to enjoy a sustained career with Oakleigh in the VFA before a final stint in the country leagues.
