Coming from the South Melbourne Under 19s, Russell Cook developed into a reliable and athletic defender for the Swans during a lean era for the club. A talented all-round sportsman who also played first-class cricket for Victoria as a left-arm fast-medium bowler, Cook brought that same endurance and coordination to the football field. Standing 185cm, he was often tasked with key defensive posts where his overhead marking and disciplined checking made him a mainstay of the backline, though he was versatile enough to drift forward and hit the scoreboard when required.

Cook's consistency was rewarded in 1972 when he won the Bob Skilton Medal as the club's Best and Fairest, a significant achievement in a team that often struggled against the powerhouse sides of the day. While the Swans rarely tasted finals action during his decade-long tenure, Cook remained a loyal servant to the red and white, racking up 164 games before hanging up the boots in 1975. His dual-sport background and durability cemented his status as one of South Melbourne's most dependable performers of the late 1960s and early 70s.
