Bio
Recruited from Sandringham in the VFA, Russell Hodges was a versatile utility capable of playing taller than his 185cm frame suggested, often pinching-hitting in the ruck or patrolling a half-back flank. He commenced his VFL career with South Melbourne, where he served as a useful depth player for the Bloods but struggled to cement a permanent spot in the senior side over four seasons. In search of greater opportunity, Hodges made a mid-season switch to Fitzroy during 1977, a move that immediately yielded results as he played out the year in the seniors. He enjoyed his most consistent campaign with the Lions in 1978, featuring in 21 games as a reliable defender, before eventually returning to the VFA where he enjoyed further success as a captain-coach.
