Bio
Recruited from Casterton in Victoria’s Western District, Russell Johnston arrived at Collingwood in 1980 as a promising young ruckman. He managed eight senior appearances and booted two goals in the black and white, but his time at Victoria Park was brief and he was delisted at the end of the season. Seeking to revive his career, he crossed the border to join Port Adelaide in the SANFL in 1981, a move that transformed him into a South Australian football legend. Johnston evolved into a dominant, mobile ruckman and an inspirational leader, eventually captaining the Magpies to premierships in 1989 and 1990. While his VFL career was a footnote, his legacy was cemented at Alberton, where he won the 1989 Jack Oatey Medal and was later named as the first ruck in Port Adelaide’s greatest team of all time.
