Bio
Recruited from local club Ashby, Russell Madden was a tough and vigorous half-back who initially struggled to cement a regular spot in the Geelong lineup. After managing just sporadic appearances at Corio Bay, he transferred to Essendon in 1932 in search of greater opportunity and immediately found himself in the senior side. Madden enjoyed his most consistent run of form at Windy Hill, establishing himself as a rugged defender who applied immense physical pressure on opposition forwards. His VFL career concluded after a final game in 1934, after which he moved to the VFA with Sandringham and later captain-coached Mangoplah to a premiership in the Albury district before serving his country in World War II.
