Bio
Recruited from Oakleigh, Russell McHenry was a diminutive rover and small forward who played two seasons for South Melbourne in the early 1970s. Standing just 170cm, he relied on his agility and goal sense to make an impact at VFL level, managing 14 goals from his 17 appearances. While he was unable to cement a long-term spot at the Lakeside Oval, McHenry found immediate individual success after crossing the Nullarbor to join East Fremantle. He made an instant impression in the WAFL, topping the Sharks' goalkicking list in 1973, the very year after his departure from South Melbourne.
