Bio
Recruited from Kensington in North Melbourne's local zone, Russell Muir was a tenacious defender who played a significant role in the club's rise under Ron Barassi. He established himself as a back pocket specialist and featured in the 1974 Grand Final side that fell to Richmond. However, his tenure at Arden Street is often remembered for a stroke of misfortune; despite playing 17 games during the historic 1975 season, he missed out on selection for the premiership team that secured the club's first flag, eventually departing the Kangaroos after the 1976 season.
Muir crossed to Essendon in 1977, where he found greater stability and became a fixture in the Bombers' defence for five seasons. Known for his close-checking style and disciplined application, he added grit to the Essendon backline during a transitional era for the club. He retired at the end of 1981 having surpassed the 100-game milestone, respected as a reliable defender who performed consistently at the top level despite missing out on ultimate premiership glory.
