Bio
Recruited from Seymour in the Goulburn Valley, Russell "Rhino" Richards was a powerfully built utility who combined physical strength with blistering straight-line speed. He made an immediate impression at Melbourne, playing 19 games in his debut season to earn the club's Best First Year Player award in 1983. While he played various roles over five seasons, Richards was often used as a line-breaker, a talent famously confirmed when he won the 1987 VFL Grand Final Sprint. His career ended with a cinematic cameo in the 1987 Elimination Final against North Melbourne; brought into the side as a late replacement for Brian Wilson, he kicked a memorable running goal to help seal the Demons' first finals victory since 1964. Despite that highlight, he did not feature in the remainder of the finals campaign and returned to country football the following year before a brief stint with Prahran in the VFA.
