Bio
Recruited from the Burnie Dockers with pick 68 in the 1996 National Draft, Russell Robertson arrived at Melbourne as a speculative selection but developed into one of the club's most prolific modern forwards. Despite lacking the physical stature of a traditional key position player, he utilised a phenomenal vertical leap to play well above his height, becoming renowned for his ability to take spectacular contested marks against larger opponents. This aerial prowess, combined with a reliable set shot and competitive work rate at ground level, allowed him to function as a dynamic focal point in attack alongside captain David Neitz.
Robertson featured in the Demons' 2000 Grand Final side and elevated his standing within the club during the following seasons, claiming the Keith 'Bluey' Truscott Medal as best and fairest in 2003. He led Melbourne's goalkicking on four occasions, often shouldering the scoring burden during periods of team inconsistency. While a ruptured Achilles tendon in 2008 threatened to end his career prematurely, he fought back to play a final season in 2009, departing as a beloved fan favourite who had maximised his natural athletic gifts to become a genuine match-winner.
