Bio
Recruited from Frankston Peninsula, Russell Shields was a capable medium forward who broke into the VFL with Hawthorn during the club's golden era in the 1980s. Finding senior opportunities limited within a star-studded lineup that included some of the game's greatest goalkickers, he moved to South Australia to represent Central District in the SANFL. Shields returned to Victoria in 1988 for a second chance with Footscray, making an immediate impact by booting five goals in his club debut against Sydney at Waverley Park. While his top-level career was relatively brief, he proved himself a dangerous option around goal when given the space to operate.
