Bio
A classic example of a mature-age recruit seizing a late opportunity, Ryan Abbott was working as an electrician and playing for Grovedale in the local leagues before earning his shot with Geelong via pick 69 in the 2016 National Draft. Standing 200cm, he developed in the VFL before making a memorable debut in 2018 against Richmond, where the ruckman displayed his capacity to drift forward by booting two goals. Despite showing promise as a tap ruckman with goal-kicking utility, he found himself stuck behind Rhys Stanley and Esava Ratugolea in the pecking order, managing just five senior appearances over three seasons at Kardinia Park. Seeking greater opportunity, Abbott moved to St Kilda with pick 60 in the 2019 draft to serve as experienced depth behind Rowan Marshall and Paddy Ryder. He added one final game to his tally in 2020 before being delisted, concluding his brief AFL tenure as a handy backup who bridged the gap between local footy and the elite level.
