Bio
Originally recruited from the Calder Cannons with pick 55 in the 2002 National Draft, Ryan Crowley faced an early career crossroads when he was delisted by Fremantle without playing a game at the end of 2004. Handed a lifeline via the rookie list, he eventually cemented his place in the side, transforming from a flanker into the competition's preeminent tagger. Renowned for his supreme aerobic capacity and disciplined close-checking, Crowley became the primary silencer for the league's most damaging midfielders, engaging in high-profile battles with stars like Gary Ablett Jr and Chris Judd. His influence on the game was significant enough to earn him the 2012 Doig Medal, a rare distinction for a pure defensive midfielder.
Crowley's tenure at Fremantle concluded under difficult circumstances after he served a 12-month suspension for a doping violation involving a painkiller, causing him to miss the entire 2015 season. Although the Dockers opted not to renew his contract, his career had a unique epilogue when he signed with Essendon in 2016. Recruited as a top-up player to bolster a squad decimated by WADA suspensions, Crowley provided hardened experience and on-field leadership for the Bombers, playing 11 games in his final season before announcing his retirement.
